Vitamins and Their Different Types

Vitamins are the essential constituents of a diet that ensure perfect functioning of a body. They also enhance the physical and mental health of an individual. Presence of little amounts of vitamins is enough for the efficient functioning of the body. Go through to know about the different types of vitamins.

Vitamins are generally classified into two categories based on their solubility. They include water soluble and fat soluble vitamins. Those which are soluble in water are termed water soluble vitamins and they include vitamin B and vitamin C. Fat soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E and K.

Vitamin A, also called as retinol is essential for growth and healthy skin and hair. It even plays a key role in maintaining the immune system of the body. It also ensures perfect eye health and reduces any vision disabilities. Vitamin A is present in various food sources including milk, cheese, butter, chicken, eggs and fish oil. A compound called beta carotene that is present in various sources gets converted to vitamin A after reaching the body.

Vitamin B includes a complex of vitamins including vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamine), biotin and pantothenic acid. Vitamins B6 and B12 help in cell repair, digestion, production of energy and also in maintenance of immune system. Vitamin B12 helps in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Various other kinds of B vitamins have several significant roles in maintaining physiology of the body. Yeast extracts, animal products like meat, milk and eggs, nuts and pulses, and wholegrain cereals are some of the sources of vitamin B.

Vitamin C, which is important for growth, healthy body tissue, wound repair and an efficient immune system, is present in fresh fruits and vegetables. It even reduces cholesterol levels and regulates blood pressure. Vitamin D is found in fish oil, cod liver oil and dairy products. It plays an important role in calcium absorption and is essential for bone and teeth health. Vitamin E, found in corn oil, olive oil, sweet potatoes and so on, has a role in maintenance of healthy heart, blood and circulation. Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin which is involved in blood clotting process and maintenance of strong bones. Since, every vitamin has its own significant role, the uptake of each and every vitamin is very much needed for your body. Hence, ensure taking vitamin rich diet and supplements regularly.
